Taking the first step into primary school is a milestone that can be accompanied by many questions. Moving with your child from early learning into primary comes with new adventures and opportunities. However, change isn’t always easy to navigate and children need support as they move from infancy to independence.
Moving from Kinder to a new school the following year is a big leap for a little person, which is why the Early Learning Centre partners with educators from the Primary campus throughout the year. Engaging in cross-campus activities helps early learners become familiar with the broader campus community. Activities are carefully designed to support each child as they prepare to move into, and form strong connections with, the primary campus. Activities include visits to the Library, weekly visits from the Year 5 buddies, participation in chapel services and combined sporting events. The cross-campus activities are often the highlight of the program for our early learners, helping them to develop valuable social skills, develop strong bonds with others and a create a sense of belonging within a larger campus community.
We also know just how important it is to support families through this time. To provide the most supportive and nurturing process for our Early Learning families moving into Prep, we have developed a pathway to primary called ‘Step into Prep’. The program provides a helpful Information Session for parents in Term 2 in a relaxed environment where you can meet your child’s new educators on the primary campus with plenty of time for questions and answers.
Your child is invited to attend the Orientation Days held in Terms 3 and 4, where we welcome incoming Prep students into the classroom to meet the teacher and familiarise themselves with the learning areas and activities. When the time comes to start Prep, everything is familiar for both child and parents. In this way, making the move into primary is less of a leap and more of a familiar ‘step’.
If you are considering enrolling for Prep next year, or have already enrolled, the Parent Information Session is one of the first steps in your journey towards prep.
