HCC In-Depth (Episode 11)

Four weeks into Term 3 and almost at the halfway mark, HCC In-Depth welcomes TELICIA and KALEANA to the desk this week for an episode full of hands-on learning and community spirit — from a wild day out at Gumbuya World to a firsthand look at how our laws are made.

A Wild Day at Gumbuya World
On Monday the 3rd of August, Grade 3 braved the cold for a day out at Gumbuya World, getting up close with animals as part of their Living and Non-Living unit. The excursion tied straight into classroom learning, with students looking at animal classifications and lifecycles out in the field instead of from a textbook. Timing worked in their favour too — students caught feeding time with the kangaroos and koalas, and even watched a python feed, an event that only happens once a month. In between feedings, Grade 3 explored a range of Australian animals and birds, taking notes to bring back to school for their animal dioramas, and the day wrapped up with a live free-flying bird show. A cold day, but a big one for learning.

Democracy in Action: VCE Legal Studies at Parliament
VCE Legal Studies students from both Unit 3 and 4 travelled to Victorian Parliament for a guided tour through the building, taking in the library, the Legislative Assembly, and the Legislative Council. It wasn't just a walkthrough — students took part in a role play, introducing a bill and following it step by step through to becoming legislation, putting the theory from class into practice. Along the way, the tour guide shared insight into the work and life of Victoria's state politicians, along with plenty of history on the building itself and the people who've worked there since the 19th century. For a subject built on understanding how our legal system works, it doesn't get much more real than standing in the room where it happens.

Exploring the Nation's Capital: Year 6 Canberra Camp
In Week 3, Year 6 students from both Narre Warren South and Officer campuses travelled to Canberra for five days of discovery, taking a deep dive into the story of our nation. The itinerary covered some of the country's most significant sites, including Parliament House, the High Court, and the War Memorial, giving students a firsthand look at how government works, how the law is upheld, and the history that's shaped who we are.

Beyond Heritage
This week's Beyond Heritage takes us around our local community and beyond. Over in Officer, locals gathered at the Gurdwara Siri Guru Nanak Darbar to mark World Drowning Prevention Day, with a morning focused on water safety and awareness for families across the area. Down in Clyde, Shopping on Clyde is celebrating ten years as the heart of the local community, with a month-long birthday bash featuring an animatronic dragon, kids' craft sessions, face painting, and a lucky spinning wheel with over $1,500 in giveaways. Closer to home, Adventist Media's Christian Vision and Hearing Services has been helping church members with vision impairment connect with Scripture through free giant-print Bibles and solar-powered audio Bibles called godpods, reaching more than twenty people since the program started. And to finish on a smile - Australian grandfather Donald Walker celebrated his 89th birthday by skydiving 13,000 feet over the Sunshine Coast alongside his grandson, his third jump, with no plans to stop anytime soon.
