HCC In-Depth (Episode 09)

Three weeks into Term 3, HCC In-Depth is back with a jam-packed episode. Zakhari continues finding his feet alongside Jasleen at the anchor desk, and this week the pair welcomed Cam and Marii to join them for the broadcast.

Culture, Community and Curiosity
Over the school holidays, our Early Learning Centre children turned their attention to NAIDOC Week, exploring themes of community and unity through shared stories. Educators guided the children through a meaningful Acknowledgement of Country on the yarning mat, building an early understanding of belonging and First Nations culture. The children also studied the official 2026 NAIDOC Week artwork, reinterpreting its story through their own creative symbols and paint patterns.

Staying Safe in a Digital World
Navigating the internet safely is a crucial skill, which is why our Year 7 to 9 students recently took part in a Digital Footprint Workshop run in conjunction with the eSafety Commissioner. The session explored the long-term impact of students' digital footprints and helped them evaluate online risks, giving them the tools and awareness to protect themselves and their peers online.

Real-World Learning for Our Seniors
Our Year 12 students put their budgeting and culinary skills to the test with a trip to Casey Central, tasked with purchasing ingredients within a set budget before returning to school to prepare a meal using only what they'd bought — a brilliant reality check for independent living that forced students to plan, problem-solve and work together under kitchen conditions.

In another industry link-up, Year 12 students also visited the Yakult Factory, getting a firsthand look at complex manufacturing and food production processes — from massive fermentation vats to high-tech automated packaging lines — providing great real-world context for their science and business studies.

Safety First at Officer Campus
Safety is always Heritage College's number one priority. The Officer campus recently ran a routine safety drill, transitioning smoothly into evacuation mode. Students and staff followed protocols excellently, demonstrating outstanding cooperation, calm leadership and efficiency throughout.

Prep Creativity in Action
Our Preps' classroom was filled with excitement, teamwork and creativity as students worked together to transform a simple cardboard box into a magnificent pretend cake, carefully icing and decorating it as a team. The hands-on task supported numeracy learning — shapes, positioning, measurement, counting and spatial awareness — while building oral language, collaboration and problem-solving skills.

Beyond Heritage
This week, Will took us beyond the school gates for a look at what's happening in our wider community. Transit Soup Kitchen and Food Support in Narre Warren has been given a specialised refrigerated shipping container worth $45,000, donated by Omnitech Playgrounds, allowing the organisation to store more rescued food — including meat and other high-protein items — for families across Casey and Cardinia. Closer to home, the Solomon Islands for Christ campaign wrapped up with a huge Sabbath of celebration, bringing the campaign to over 300 locations across all nine provinces of the Solomon Islands. And on the Sunshine Coast, 89-year-old grandfather Donald Walker celebrated his birthday by skydiving from 13,000 feet alongside his grandson — his third jump — proving age is no excuse to stop chasing new experiences.

Down to the Siren
It was a quiet week for Primary sport, with no official matches on the calendar — but our Prep to Year 2 students from both campuses are gearing up to kick off a highly anticipated six-week gymnastics program at Sparta Gymnastics, building strength, balance and agility.

Congratulations to our Players of the Week: William Murphy (OCP) and Rosie Dobson (NCP) leading the way for our Primary Champions, alongside Secondary Standouts Navraj and Taysha (10B), Madison Mam and George Kim (9A), and Rebecca Castillo and Ryan Sharma (7B).

And finally, huge congratulations to our own Wade Smithels, who has officially been selected for the USA Basketball Squad — an extraordinary achievement the entire Heritage College community is incredibly proud of.
