Help your little one Step into Prep at Heritage College

Published on Friday 24 August, 2018

The transition from Early Learning years is a big step as you help your little one transition from kinder to becoming an enthusiastic Primary learner. As a parent, making the best choice for your childā€™s education can be influenced by friendship groups, the location of the school or the size of enrolments.

How do I know if my child is ready to go to Prep next year?

Nerves are a common part of commencing any new journey or event. As a parent, you have the advantage of the most insight and understanding of your childā€™s abilities and capacity. Good indicators for readiness for the Prep year include displaying:

  • An awareness socially of others
  • Confidence to attempt new things
  • Eagerness to learn
  • Natural curiosity and participation in investigative play.

Your kindergarten teacher will also be a great guide; they have helped many a kindergarten pupil into their first year of school. One of the best ways to alleviate any first-day Prep nerves is to be part of an Early Learning Centre that supports a strong transition program into Prep.

Heritage College Transition Program

At Heritage College, we support the four-year-old kinder group to transition into the Prep program seamlessly. Held in Term 4, Orientation sessions help young learners to make the step from the Early Learning program to the Prep classroom with ease. The students are accompanied to the Prep classroom by ELC leaders where they meet their new teacher, become accustomed to their new learning environment and choose from a number of tables and interest areas to enjoy play-based learning.

During each session, incoming Prep parents will stay and connect with the four-year-old kinder parents over tea or coffee or have any queries answered by friendly support staff.

We understand that leaving the kinder years behind is a big step. By facilitating a positive transition to the classroom space and introducing teaching staff at small intervals across Term 4 enables each child to feel secure, supported and nurtured. And when the First Day of Prep comes, they are ready to take their next steps into their Heritage College journey.

Register your place in our transition to Prep program in Term 4, at Narre Warren or Officer campus.

Places for Prep 2024 are filling quickly across both campuses and applications for enrolment close soon. Visit our enquiries page to apply today.
