Year 3-6 Athletics Carnival 2020

Year 3-6 Athletics Carnival 2020

Published on Tuesday 10 March, 2020

In Week 4 of Term 1, upper primary students battled it out 'House v House' in track and field events at Casey Fields Regional Athletics Centre.

Students chose their three preferred running events and two preferred field events to participate in. There was a 'buzz' trackside as the buses arrived and athletes were briefed; they just wanted to get out there and get started. There were many great individual performances throughout the day, some children winning ribbons, others just participating for the fun and excitement of competing with their friends. I was really impressed by the spirit of 'doing your best' and 'having a go' throughout the day. Children (and adults) could be heard cheering each other on, regardless of whether they were wearing Blue, Yellow, Red or Green. It was clear that participation and having fun were the priorities, and this fostered tremendous sportsmanship among our athletes.

There were many outstanding individual performances. All students who achieved first place in an individual event have automatically qualified for the Sporting Schools Victoria (SSV) District Athletics Carnival to be held on Monday, 27th July 2020.

Congratulations to all competitors who took part and earned valuable House Points for their team. It was a close run event between Jackson and Landy, with Team Green being crowned Athletics Champions in 2020 by less than 10 points.

Quotes from students:

We all used teamwork and at the end we all finished the races. My highlight is that the best team won, go Landy. ~ Mireya

I am so proud of everybody for being resilient, whenever somebody fell they got back up and tried again and that is what resilience is all about. ~ Madison T

The athletics carnival was one of the best we have had, my favourite part was the relay. We got to race the other houses and we had so much fun, thanks Heritage College for an amazing day. ~ Caleb

Iā€™m so proud of Jackson for coming second. The highlight of the athletics day was everyone participating in every event. ~ Talulah

Good job Landy, good teamwork. Iā€™m so proud of Landy for coming first and well doing for participating. The highlight of the athletics day was that everyone was showing excellence. ~ Madison B

The athletic carnival was really fun and everyone tried their best. The highlight was everyone showed the values, mostly resilience and Jackson came 2nd place. ~ Beatrice

Quotes from the teaching staff:

"Shout out to Cailib in shot put! Stuck with me the entire time and did a great job." - Mr Orellana

"Nyamer was listening on the walkie talkie and tracked down students I was looking for to get track heats underway. She left her event to assist elsewhere when needed." - Mr Sevenhuysen

"I think it was really good how some of the Year 7ā€™s jumped in to help other events ..... and even went out looking to offer their help. (In particular Abdi and Jalane, from what I noticed.) - Mr Waldrip

Finally, a big thank you to the volunteers and staff

Special recognition must go to our Year 7 'volunteers' who eagerly fulfilled the duties assigned. Our team of primary educators really appreciated the extra assistance afforded them by our secondary students.

Thank you to our dedicated staff for organising and pulling off such a memorable event; it was a massive day! Thank you also to the families who came along to cheer on not only their own children but everyone competing.

See the photo album from the day here.
